The Future Of Weddings

On the face of it, weddings have barely changed in decades. But now the government is assessing the legislation on wedding venues, with the law likely to change, allowing weddings to be held at outside venues, pubs and restaurants previously constrained by archaic laws.

“While the laws around who can get married have evolved substantially in recent years, the laws on how and where marriages must take place have remained largely unchanged since 1836,” said a Treasury spokesperson in the Guardian.

The upshot, weddings are potentially about to become a lot more affordable.

Rebecca Kelly, CEO of VenueScanner - a platform enabling organisers to easily discover & book 18,000 venues, has identified key emerging weddings trends:

"We’ve seen a clear movement towards industrial venues, where couples can place their own personality, and barns that have a rustic themes, and this movement is coming at the expense of more traditional venues,

Weddings can typically cost between £20,000 and £30,000, with our data showing that couples typically spend £4,500 plus on the venue itself. The Future Of Weddings

This change to the legislation is an important starting point in reducing the cost of weddings, and as the types of venues that couples choose diversifies, we expect that the perception that there is a traditional go-to wedding venue will soon die out.’

It’s not just the venues that are changing, but the bands and the genre of music too. According to James McAulay CEO of Encore, the UK’s leading site for booking wedding bands, requests are shifting from typical cheesy songs and 80s classics:

‘Mumford and Sons' folk-pop bands are continuing to grow in popularity. The trend started a few years ago as the outdoor festival-themed wedding grew in popularity, and it shows no signs of slowing down.’

“We are getting a LOT of requests for Postmodern Jukebox style jazz bands. Postmodern Jukebox are a phenomenal YouTube success story, and they're having a huge impact on the wedding scene.”

There’s a growing trend for couples to involve their guests in taking photos, effectively crowdsourcing and collecting them on apps such as Wedpics, instead of spending thousands of pounds on a photographer. This, and an increase in drone usage at weddings, has rapidly changed the dynamic for wedding photos and is providing unusual results.

For those getting married in the next few years, the wedding of the future is starting to look very different to the wedding of today.
