Wedding season is upon us and after choosing the groom, venue and dress, getting in shape is the next big priority for brides! The Gym, the UK’s pioneer low-cost gym operator, is helping brides across the UK get in perfect wedding shape so to dazzle in your dress, whether it’s spaghetti straps, a halterneck or a show-stopping strapless gown, having toned and sculpted arms are an essential part of looking beautiful on the big day.
If you’re a bride, a bridesmaid or wedding guest, The Gym has five simple steps to getting toned and sculpted so you can bare those upper arms with confidence. Allyn Condon, Double Olympian, Personal Trainer and General Manager at The Gym Bristol Longwell Green, explains: “As experts in high quality, low-cost 24-hour fitness, we know that a wedding is one of the top motivators for getting in shape.
“We’ve helped thousands of brides reach their fitness goals so they can look their best when walking down the aisle. Many face the battle of how to tone their upper arms to showcase in a sleeveless dress but our five effective exercises, which can be done in the gym or at home, are your secret weapons in looking fit and fabulous.”
Here are Allyn’s five essential exercises if you’re going strapless this summer:
Bent Over Row (dumbbells)
A great exercise to target the biceps and triceps but offers additional benefits to your glutes, back and core. Start off with three sets of 10 and progress up to 15's or 20's. You can also do alternate rows to mix it up and add further additional core benefits.
Dumbbell Punches
Dumbbell punches will not only tone and shape those arm muscles but adding extra time to the set will burn off some additional calories as well. Try working to start with sets of punches, three sets of 20 for each arm and then when you master the technique add some light dumbbells and go for three sets of 1 minutes.
Reverse Tricep Dips
A simple exercise that you can do anywhere and very easy to adapt intensity by body adjustments. No need for a weight, just hit the reps hard. Pick a chair, use a wall or a set of steps and away you go. A huge exercise for tightening up the triceps and reducing the hard to hit flabby part of the rear arm.
Skull Crushes
A powerful exercise to not only tone the triceps but also hit those abs. Make sure you only extend from the elbows and not the shoulders and keep that big focus on the triceps.
Curl and Press
A dual exercise focusing initially on the biceps but then in the second stage, change the emphasis to triceps and shoulders. A great exercise and a great time saver. If you don't have time to do more, use this one in isolation to hit all areas.
Allyn continues: “Quite often with a busy lifestyle and lots of wedding prep, training isn’t always a priority but to achieve strong and toned upper arms, you should incorporate three sets of each exercise into your weekly workout at least two months before your wedding date. Typically, after two months, through regular exercise and good nutrition, you should start to see a change and notice more definition. Plan in good time and be very specific about the goals that you want to achieve. That way, you can tailor your training and nutrition plan to exactly what you need.
“Getting toned and strong is also not just about the big day either. By following these five simple but effective exercises, you can stay in shape for the summer and beyond.
