Traditionally wedding speeches have been reserved for male members of the wedding party, but now it seems that an increasing number of brides, and even bridesmaids, are taking the microphones, to have their own say.

Here, Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel & Country Club’s wedding coordinator, Tanya Lattimer, explores this trend and shares her top tips on how to make a successful speech.

A new study conducted by a UK based holiday company has revealed that 85% of brides to be and their hen parties would prefer a classy hen weekend over a tacky one. ‘Not getting drunk’, ‘spending quality time with family and friends’, ‘doing something productive’ and ‘being pampered’ emerged as the top reasons why women are choosing classy breaks away, with many happy to pay from £100 to £300 for a weekend away including activities. 

A bride has told of her excitement as she prepares to take part in the UK’s first official social media wedding.

Zoe Anastasi’s big day will be captured and broadcast by iPhone-carrying photographers every 15 minutes on social media. Her ceremony will be live streamed over Twitter and there will be social media walls at her reception. Her day has even been organised over Facebook.

For Zoe, from Derby, it was a no-brainer to have a professionally-run social media wedding.

“Your wedding day is the biggest day of your life. You worry that it’s over in 24 hours, and I think it’s great to enjoy the build-up, to get more people involved in it. It makes it more special.

Traditionally the bride arrives at the wedding marriage ceremony with her father, or the person chosen to give her away. The mother of the bride travels separately in a car with the bridesmaids to arrive about ten minutes before the bride.

The groom should arrive at the place of marriage well ahead of the bridesmaids together with his best man and the grooms party including the ushers.

Following the marriage ceremony the bride and her new husband travel together in the brides car to the reception venue.

It is customary for the bride and groom to buy thank you gifts for the wedding party. Traditionally, the groom would buy his new bride a gift and his new wife would buy a gift for him.  It is also common that they would both buy gifts for her bridesmaids.  A small step away from tradition, although we see it happening more and more often, is offering the mother of the bride and groom’s mother a gift as well.

It takes more than 2 to put together the perfect wedding. Always standing by your side, but never taking the spotlight, are some of the most important people involved in throwing the most fabulous celebration. From months of planning to last minute fixes your bridesmaids are an invaluable help, which is why they deserve to be thanked with a special token when all the wedding madness is over. 

But finding the perfect gift for a group of bridesmaids can be tricky. What’s important to remember is that not only is this a gift to celebrate the big day that they’re getting to be a part of, but that it’s a heartfelt thank you for each individual, that can will be used and treasured after the wedding day is over.
